Everything you need to know before starting your Mandarin journey with Mayland Academy.
1. Can complete beginners join your Mandarin classes?
Absolutely. Many of our adult students start with little or no Mandarin experience. Beginner classes focus on practical pronunciation, everyday vocabulary and useful conversations, helping you build confidence step by step from your very first lesson.
2. How do I know which Chinese level is right for me?
If you have studied Chinese before, we recommend a complimentary level assessment before joining a class. We look at your speaking, listening and overall Chinese ability, as well as your learning goals, so we can recommend the most suitable class rather than placing you based only on a textbook level.
3. Should I choose a group class or private Chinese lessons?
It depends on how you prefer to learn. Our small-group classes are ideal if you enjoy interaction, conversation practice and learning with others, while private lessons offer greater flexibility and can be personalised around your own goals, pace and schedule. If you’re unsure, we’re happy to recommend the best option after learning a little more about you.
4. Can I focus mainly on speaking and conversation?
Yes. Our Everyday Mandarin courses place a strong emphasis on practical communication and natural spoken Chinese. Lessons use real-life topics, guided conversations and interactive activities so you can practise Chinese that you can actually use outside the classroom.
5. Do you offer HSK preparation courses in Hong Kong?
Yes. We offer structured HSK Chinese courses for learners at different levels, from foundational Chinese to more advanced study. Lessons can include vocabulary, grammar, reading, listening, speaking and exam-focused practice depending on your level and goals.
6. Do you offer Business Chinese classes for professionals?
Yes. Our Business Chinese lessons can be tailored to your professional needs, including workplace communication, meetings, presentations, business vocabulary and cross-cultural communication. We can also design private or customised Chinese training for professionals and corporate teams.
7. Can I try a class before enrolling?
Yes. If you are new to Mayland Academy, you can start with an assessment or trial lesson so we can better understand your Chinese level, learning style and goals. For group classes, we will also check the current class level and availability to make sure the group is a good fit for you.
8. What if the current group class schedule doesn’t suit me?
Feel free to contact us even if you cannot find a suitable class on the current schedule. New groups may open as students with similar levels and availability join us, and private lessons are also available for learners who need a more flexible timetable.
